Essay Contest – Win a $2,500 scholarship

open to 11th and 12th graders in San Diego County

Your essay should thoughtfully answer any one of the following questions:

1) The state has frozen funding for social services for the poor, and San Diego County, unlike many other counties, has decided it’s not going to help bridge the gap. Do you agree with that decision? If so, what is your view on the level of social services the county should provide? If not, how should the county fund more social services?

2) Should the city of San Diego recycle sewage to buttress our supply of drinking water? San Diego is facing a long-term water shortage. There are efforts to conserve water, build seawater desalination plants and invest billions to shore up other sources. But the city has been reluctant to use sewage because of concerns about cost and the perception of drinking purified wastewater. Should the city continue studying this new source and implement it or not?

3) Was San Diego Unified School District right to not take part in the California application for Race to the Top? Race to the Top is a competition between states to get more federal stimulus money for schools by promising to do specific reforms that the Obama Administration wants, such as including student test scores as part of teachers' evaluations. San Diego Unified didn't participate in Race to the Top because it argued that it knew too little about what it would entail. Its elected leaders are also wary of some of the reforms.

Official Rules:

1) Essays must be original work, typed, 1,000 words or less and must be received on or before Friday, May 21, 2010.

2) To enter, students must live in San Diego County, be enrolled in an accredited high school in San Diego County, and be in 11th or 12th grade.

3) The student must write the essay and any quotations or copyrighted material must be identified properly.

4) Scholarships can be used for any college, university, or trade school.

5) Each student may only submit one essay.

6) Essays will be judged on insightfulness, supporting facts and evidence, development of ideas and style.

7) Submit your essay preferably via email to summer@voiceofsandiego.org. You will receive a confirmation of receipt within 24 hours. If you do not, contact the voice office at 619.325.0525. We will also accept essays by U.S. mail to voiceofsandiego.org Essay Contest, 2508 Historic Decatur Rd, Ste 120, San Diego, CA 92106.

8) Please be sure to include your name, address, phone number, school you attend, and grade level (11th or 12th) in the email or, if mailing, on a cover sheet. Please do not have that information on your actual essay, as essays will be reviewed and judged without identifying information.

· 2 credits total (two classes) can be made up

· English, History, Math and Science classes can be made up. ONLY if a student has received a D or F grade

· CAHSEE Prep classes offered(student can take this class without having failed and receive credit)

· ESL classes offered as well for those who qualify

Moonwalking - The Science Behind Exploration of the Moon: Past, Present and Future

It has been nearly 40 years since Americans last walked on the surface of the Moon - one of the greatest
achievements of civilization. And yet many of us know very little about our closest neighbor in space. Why does the Moon
show phases? How did it form, and what can it tell us about the history of the Earth? How did we get there, and how can we use
advances in technology to get there again? What is it like to survive and work in lunar gravity? Should we eventually colonize the Moon?

Using hands-on activities, interactive physics demonstrations, and rare restored archival footage from the Apollo missions, Dr. Philip Blanco
will take us on a journey in space and time to inform and inspire the next generation of explorers.

All participants will receive free admission to the San Diego Air and Space Museum, including the new Science of Aliens exhibition.

Where: Farmer's Market in Little Italy (known as the Mercado)

Transportation: On your own, but the trolley DOES go to Little Italy

What: Students will participate in a group "scavenger hunt" thru the farmer's market learning about the locally grown produce sold there. They will also hear a demonstration from a local chef on meals they can prepare with the foods sold at the farmer's market. EVERY student will get a goody bag with local stuff, coupons and $10 worth of food from the market to take home with them. Learning to eat healthier is the mission/idea.

Students MUST sign up on the sign in sheet on Ms. Zanini's door by this Friday during lunch. More details on exact meeting spot from Ms. Zanini First 25-30 students ONLY. We cannot take more than this.

Parents are welcome to attend

Students MUST wear lanyard, be on time, represent SciTech well, and stay the entire time (only 2.5 hours or less)

Teen Vogue, O'Neill Begin Generation Next Project

Teen Vogue and O’Neill are about to embark on our 3rd annual Generation Next project. Each year, Generation Next selects 5 talented and driven high school students (sophomores and juniors) to participate in the program. Teen Vogue and O’Neill then mentors these students on the ins and outs of design and marketing. An invaluable hands-on experience and a definite resume-builder. The 5 selected finalists will have the opportunity to:

• Design their own dress or romper, as well as an accessory, and ultimately have them produced
• Learn all the ins and outs of design, marketing, and runway production—which is integral to a future career in fashion
• Put together a runway show featuring their friends and peers in front of a live audience including fashion industry insiders
• Showcase their designed O’Neill pieces at a live runway show where they’ll compete against 5 other finalists for the top-voted design.

The 2010 Generation Next grand prize winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship for their future fashion education, an O’Neill wardrobe, and a highly-coveted internship at O’Neill. Interested students can apply through the O’Neill recruitment survey.

'Ag-Discovery' Program Offers Two-Week Look at Careers

This two-week program allows participants ages 12-17 to live on a college campus and learn about Agricultural science from university professors, practicing veterinarians and professionals working for the U.S. Government. Students chosen to participate in Ag-Discovery will gain experience through hands-on labs, workshops, field trips and other group and team building activities.

The 2010 Ag Discovery Programs' application postmarked deadline date is April 10, 2010.
